Mid Atlantic Tag Team Titles

Post by Larry » 2002/09/21 Sat 3:47 pm

In doing further research on the Mid Atlantic region, I have uncovered a newspaper clipping from December 26th, 1973 regarding the Mid Atlantic Tag Team championship.

The champions, Brute Bernard & Jay York (managaed by Beautiful Beauregard), defended their titles against Gene and Ole Anderson. The Andersons won the match and the titles.

I believe your site shows the following:

Brute Bernerd & Mike York 73/12/04 Raleigh, NC

[...]

Gene Anderson & Ole Anderson [4] 74/02<
* Defeat Johnny Weaver & Bob Bruggers.

So, actually, the Andersons won the titles on 73/12/26 by defeating Bernard & York.

Wow, thanks for the info!

What I have now is this:
Brute Bernerd & Mike York 73/12/04 Raleigh, NC
[...]
Gene Anderson & Ole Anderson [4] 74/02<
* Defeat Johnny Weaver & Bob Bruggers.

Should it look like this:
Brute Bernerd & Mike York 73/12/04 Raleigh, NC
Gene Anderson & Ole Anderson [4] 73/12/26

or this?
Brute Bernerd & Mike York 73/12/04 Raleigh, NC
[...]
Brute Bernard & Jay York
Gene Anderson & Ole Anderson [4] 73/12/26
[...]
Gene Anderson & Ole Anderson [5] 74/02<
* Defeat Johnny Weaver & Bob Bruggers.

I don't even kow if Mike York and Jay York are the same person or family members.

Where did it take place?

Title Change Dates

Post by Larry » 2002/09/21 Sat 4:16 pm

The title change in question took place in Columbia, SC at the Township Auditorium.

I am in the process in gathering newspaper clippings from The State newspaper archives at the local library. I started my search beginning in September 1973 (when I uncovered the name changes I posted earlier). I have just gathered the results from December 1973. This is where the title change is documented.

So, to answer your question, I don't know for sure if another title change occured in 74/02. For now, you probably should list the Mid Atlantic Tag Team titles as:

Brute Bernerd & Mike York 73/12/04 Raleigh, NC
Gene Anderson & Ole Anderson [4] 73/12/26 Columbia, SC

If I can find evidence that Weaver & Bruggers had a stint as MATTC, I'll let you know.

Thanks for responding so quickly!

Is Mike York the same person as Jay York?

Mike/Jay York

No, Mike and Jay York are two different people. Mike should be the one listed in the Mid Atlantic area at this time. Jay came in later.

I think this confusion about the names has lead to seeing one listed for the other on several occasions.

Jay York was 'The Alaskan' from AWA. Mike York was his worked brother in the 'Alaskans' tag team. Might be able to find real names, I'll look.

So long from the Sunshine State!

Your Mid-Atlantic Title History lists Brute Bernard and Mike York as
winning the titles on 11/1/73. Mike York never held a title in the
Mid-Atlantic. Jay York should be listed as Brute Bernard's partner.
On Saturday 11/3/73 Sandy Scott and Nelson Royal were scheduled
to defend the Mid-Atlantic tag belts against Jay York and Brute Bernard
in Roanoke,VA. On the day of the show a newspaper article ran that
stated Swede Hanson would be teaming with Brute Bernard that night.
So for now it is unclear as to the exact date when Jay York and Brute
Bernard won the belts. There are no results to confirm that Swede Hanson
actually replaced Jay York that night for sure or that a title change took
place.
