Actual dates for renaming of titles...

Postby necrosis215 » 2002/09/01 Sun 3:24 pm

I have been looking at the date you have used for when WWF changed to WWE and have noticed that you have only included the month, Hisa.
The titles that were around at the time of the name change were:

World
IC
Euro
Women's
Tag
Cruiserweight
Hardcore

The exact date that the name change was announced both on the WWF/E official site and their programming was 06/05/2002 (May 6th).

The aforementioned titles should now look like this:

World Wrestling Federation World Heavyweight Title (??/??/1983 - 06/05/2002)
World Wrestling Entertainment World Heavyweight Title (06/05/2002 -)

World Wrestling Federation Intercontinental Heavyweight Title (??/09/1979 - 06/05/2002)
World Wrestling Entertainment Intercontinental Heavyweight Title (06/05/2002 -)

World Wrestling Federation European Heavyweight Title (26/02/1997 - 06/05/2002)
World Wrestling Entertainment European Heavyweight Title (06/05/2002 - 22/07/2002)

World Wrestling Federation Women's World Title (??/??/1983 - 06/05/2002)
World Wrestling Entertainment Women's World Title (06/05/2002 -)

World Wrestling Federation World Tag Team Title (??/??/1983 - 06/05/2002)
World Wrestling Entertainment World Tag Team Title (06/05/2002 - )

World Wrestling Federation World Cruiserweight Title (??/11/2001 - 06/05/2002)
World Wrestling Entertainment World Cruiserweight Title (06/05/2002 -)

World Wrestling Federation Hardcore Title (02/11/1998 - 06/05/2002)
World Wrestling Entertainment Hardcore Title (06/05/2002 - 26/08/2002)

I have also been looking for the exact date that WWF bought out WCW so that the Cruiserweight Title lineage can be updated. I'm a kind of specialist on the WWE Titles now, simply because I have researched them so much. I hope this helps your site and I'll be back if I get more info about the dates.

World Wrestling (Federation) Entertainment, Inc. announced that it had acquired the WCW brand on March 23, 2001.

BTW, on a related note: WCW title histories. While World Championship Wrestling, Inc. stated that Ric Flair was recognized as the first "official" WCW World heavyweight champion shortly after beating Sting for the NWA World title on January 11, 1991, the first time that they actually made reference to it as the "WCW title" was on December 16, 1990 at Starrcade. They called the Sting vs. Black Scorpion cage match the "first" WCW title bout.

haha, and that's my birthday too. lol I think that the reason Hisa has put 11/2001 is because that's when WWF defeated WCW at the PPV, was it survivor series? Yes it would have been. The exact date for survivor series was 18/11/2002 (Sept. 18th). Is this the date to be considered?

I think they may have decided upon the title change being the change over because it would be an easier date to recognise other than in the middle of somebody'd reign.

November 18, 2001 was the date of Survivor Series. The storyline was that the loser of the WWF vs. WCW/ECW tag team elimination match would "go out of business". So I would assume that the Cruiserweight title officially became a WWF title on that date, although I don't remember when they actually made the announcement.

According to the PWI Almanac, World Championship Wrestling, Inc. made their statement that Flair was the first WCW World champion sometime in April 1992. This was right around the time that they were in the process of prepping the tournaments for the NWA World heavyweight and tag team titles to be brought back. From what I was told, they were asked about why they were reviving the titles, and therefore went into all the details of explaining how the championships became split and so forth. When pressed with the question of who the first actual WCW champion was then, they did a little revisionist history and said that it was Flair in January 1991, even though they had referred to Sting as that even before then.

WCW Title

Postby necrosis215 » 2002/09/01 Sun 9:42 pm

Hmmm. Could be worth some revision to clear it up totally. Let's recap - WCW claimed in April 92 that the FIRST Champion of their company (independent from NWA) was Ric Flair after defeating Sting on Jan., 11, 1991. HOWEVER, they did claim, while Sting was champion, that a match was the FIRST ever independent WCW defence - Dec., 16, 1990. If I were you Hisa, I would use the later date (Jan., 11, 1991) in your lists. It makes sense to use it but could alse be worth a mention that the first actual defence of the title was by Stin on Dec., 16, 1990.

OK, I decided to check out Solie's Title Histories. According to them, Tajiri was first officially announced as the WWF Cruiserweight champion on December 11, 2001 in Bakersfield, CA.

Again, the NWA World title never became the WCW World title. They are and always have been two separate championships.

National Wrestling Alliance Mid-Atlantic US Heavyweight
World Championship Wrestling US Heavyweight
World Wrestling Entertainment US Heavyweight

There was no such thing called the "National Wrestling Alliance Mid-Atlantic U.S. heavyweight title". It was the U.S. heavyweight title recognized by Jim Crockett Promotions, Inc. which once upon a time used the brand name "Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling". And it was only an 'NWA' title in the storyline. In reality, the National Wrestling Alliance itself didn't officially recognize and/or sanction it.

World Wrestling Federation World Cruiserweight Title (??/11/2001 - 06/05/2002)

This title was known as WWF Light Heavyweight Championship before becoming the Cruiserweight Title. I guess it's exactly the same title.
