New history for the American Wrestling Association(AWA)

The Minneapolis-based promotion headed by Verne Gagne.

AWA Superstars

Any change we will see the history of Dale Gagner's AWA (<a href='http://www.awastars.com' target='_blank'>http://www.awastars.com</a>) titles on this Web site?

New history for the American Wrestling Association(AWA)

Postby Andrew_Adkins_AK47 » 2002/12/30 Mon 10:38 pm

Why does the history stop at 1991? I believe it started back up in 1996 by Dale Gange. Will the revived American Wrestling Association be added to the original history sometime soon?

I don't think anyone other than Dale Gagne actually regards it as the same promotion/title, but an amalgamated list can be found <a href='http://www.solie.org/titlehistories/whtawa.html' target='_blank'>here</a>

Dale Gagne only uses the intials because he bought them and his name is supposedly Gagner not Gagne, and only uses that to further the debacle he calls the New AWA

Dale is in no way related to Verne nor Gregg, He bought the Use of the letters from Verne back in 96 but it is in no way, shape or form (in my eyes anyways, and I live in minneapolis and grew up on the AWA) the same promotion or a continuation of the promotion.

Unfortunately, doesn't this fall under that since Dale Gagne (Gagner or whatever) bought the intellectual property that is the AWA from Verne Gagne, he can do whatever he wants with the "World title" history of the AWA? Other than that, in no way are the two promotions the same.

Yes. He owns the intellectual property called the "AWA", so he can legally do or say whatever he wants. And he actually acquired the rights to the name in bankruptcy court, btw.

I don't know who wrestles for the "new AWA" now, however there have been two rather interesting anecdotes in the history of the fake AWA.

In 97 and/or 98 Gagne® promoted appearances of Golga and The Patriot. These may be on seperate shows, or the same, or multiple shows, I don't recall. Mike Johnson wrote about it awhile ago. But he took local guys, had them buy the same gear as the then-WWF Superstar was using and pretend he was that WWF superstar to the crowd. I don't know if Vince ever filed charges, and would guess not since he doesn't exactly seem to be made out of money. In Golga's case though putting a local worker under the mask certainly couldn't hurt the match quality. I refuse to even consider that possible.

More recently, you may remember his promises of delivering Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Goldberg to your, if I remember correctly, "local wrestling event, casino or county fair." County fair was in it for sure. Obviously, Goldberg and Austin were not under contract to him. It was mainly viewed as a bait-and-switch as people call in to get Austin vs. Goldberg for the church fair, find out it's gonna take at least 7 figures and then ask for cheaper options, i.e. his crappy indy fed.

Recently the WWE sent Gagner a letter telling him to stop using the name and logo AWA, apparently their lawyers are under the opinion that when they bought the tape library that they acquired the rights to the name and AWA logos. I haven't heard how that's progressing, or if anyone has filed any legal action on it. Anyone know?

As I understand it, Gagner owns the logo and the promotion rights. McMahon owns the video tape library of what we all think of as AWA, and Vince can use the logos, commentary, music, etc. that is already in the videos, however can't use them to promote wrestling events. With ECW he bought everything, and I'm pretty sure he just licensed SMW footage from Cornette, seeing as Cornette still sells SMW footage in the Wrestling Gold line.

If you go to the United States Patent and Trademark Office website and search for "AWA" and "American Wrestling Association" (with quotes), it shows that both are trademarked by WWE Libraries, Inc., and Dale Gagner's name is nowehere to be found.

That's why I kinda hesitate to add the title histories of all those AWA affiliates.

This is pretty much what I beleive,
I don't understand if you have added the current title holders to the previous (1991) champions why you would not add the AWA Afiliates to the AWA section. They have affiliates in England and Japan not to mention Canada and a big chunk of the US. I have a hard time swallowing the fact that The WWE HAS NOT CRUSHED HIM so that in turn leaves me to beleive vince owns the video history and thats about it.

Apparently, the case between WWE and Dale Gagner over the rights to the AWA has been decided. The court has ruled in favor of WWE and Gagner and his associates must cease using the marks. They are also required to turn over all web domain names to WWE within 3 days.
