Jericho's IC titles

Jericho's IC titles

Postby Mister Q » 2004/09/22 Wed 9:47 pm

I just checked my friend's website after I read his reflection that Chris Jericho is a six time IC champion - not seven as he claims.

http://www.philsworld.com.au/w/wwe/champs/ic.html

Has anyone got in touch with WWE to alert them to this error? Phil's adamant that it's six IC titles. It's a record (Jeff Jarrett won five) but that's all that's correct.

i stopped counting at some point cause, well, titles have become a little meaningless. your buddy doesnt include the shared reign, thats the thing. theres a post somewhere about this. read that first. its all a bit tricky. and if you open the subject again there's gonna be bloodshed, mark my words.

Yeah, I started a thread awhile ago, probably it's deleted by now...

I did a search for a thread like that, but it only gave me a thread about "The most important title". So maybe it was deleted.

Phil didn't have the combined reign, but as I recall Jericho never actually lost the title during that period. Then again, Phil doesn't mention it at all so I doubt that's the reason it's not there. I'll ask him.

Don't put too much stock into it. WWE doesn't even know if they're coming or going these days. Jim Ross has also called Shawn Michaels the first Triple Crown winner in history about three times over the last couple of weeks, so what does that tell you? I guess Pedro Morales, Bret Hart, and Diesel all fell off the face of the earth or something.

So I'm not the only one noticing that...he's the first grand Slam winner (WWF, IC, Eurotrash & TT) though...

By my count Jericho's at 8

 1. defeated Chyna 12/12/1999
 2. title held-up 28/12/1999 declared co-champ with Chyna 03/01/2000
 3. defeated Chyna & Hardcore Holly to became sole champ 23/01/00
 4. defeated Benoit 02/05/2000
 5. defeated Benoit in a ladder match 21/01/01
 6. defeated RVD 16/09/2002
 7. defeated RVD 27/10/2003
 8. defeated Christian in a ladder match 12/09/04

Phil said that his listing doesn't recognise the shared title reign - because he regarded that whole angle as rubbish. He made that VERY clear that Jericho never lost the title during that period and he was angry that it had been recognised as a change.

Titles have been held up before and then returned to the reigning champion without a change (Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat in 1993 for example).

You mean their double pin at Spring Stampede 1994??? They faced off a week later for the title, Flair winning...Those are two separate reigns, since Flair gave back the title to WCW after the first match...

flair didnt give it back after the first match, but the night of the rematch (or a week before, but on some saturday show im positive bout that). on the subject at hand, i'm sure dan's gonna sweep in and tell us the title is wwe's intellectual property so whatever shrewd count they have, erm, counts. :D but that also means that if wwe says diesel fell off the face off the earth we gotta accept it, dan. :D

Actually, it would be seven reigns. Jericho and Chyna were declared co-Intercontinental champions on 01/03/2000. Jericho beat Holly and Chyna in a triple threat on 01/23/2000 to basically strip Chyna's claim to the title away. But, Jericho was Intercontinenal champion from 01/03/2000 until 02/27/2000, when he lost the title to Kurt Angle. Thus, the reason Jericho should only be given credit for one reign in that time period.

Flair-Steamboat

Postby Dan Poutsma » 2004/09/24 Fri 1:42 pm

Flair handed the WCW belt back to Nick Bockwinkel on 'WCW Saturday Night' to set up the rematch for the title. After Flair did that I remember they stopped calling him the champion to indicate that the title was held up. After he won they called him a '12 time' world champion (he was previously recognized as an '11' time champ), but then shortly after they changed their mind about it officially being vacant, held up, or whatever and started calling him an 11 time champ again.

Confusezzled

Postby mattitude » 2004/10/04 Mon 10:14 am

Hello,

I am confuzzled.. is Jericho's Reign you know the chyna story (him, co, him) considered 1 reign?

Some of you are claming 8, Some Say 7, My site has 6 due to the fact that the wwe did delcair it (at the time) his first title run

What is it?

Matthew

easy brother. i used to be very harsh in such respects, but then i found the woman of my dreams. :guitar:
Consider boxing. There are so many threads of championship lineage, it would take ages to unentwine 'em. and there are various methods of counting according to this (linear, man-who-beats-the-man etc). [i had to delete a part of the text that was quite long and full of rambling]
so, to use a boxing analogy, jericho was stripped of part of his ic title and saw it awarded to chyna. he was ic champion then, but not undisputed. he beat her and holly to unify the ic championship and become undisputed again. so, he was champion all the time. no title change happened. just one reign. thats how i count. count whatever way you want. as for the "the way the promotion counts is official" stance... go for it, if you wanna. but, people outside japan wouldnt know inoki had won the wwf title to this day if everyone thought like that. or all those other naughty things promoters don't acknowledge. like diesel winning the wwe triple crown (which i'd keep locked up somewhere in a deep dungeon, personally)

Thank You

Postby mattitude » 2004/10/04 Mon 9:48 pm

Hello,

That makes perfect sense.. he was the champ all along just for part of his reign he was not undisputed.. now I understand so really WWE is ingnoring the chyna/y2j co-reign and making the triple threat he won @ Royal Rumble 2000 vs chyna and ??? and now looking at it as his second reign and changing the dates he won his 3rd and 4th and so on into 4th and 5th.

Thank You So Much
Matthew
