i have found this on wrestling-titles.com:
Georg Hackenschmidt 05/05/04 New York, NY
Has been recognized as world greco-roman champion in Europe as of 1900/04; also has won the world championship tournaments in Vienna, Paris, Hamburg, St. Petersburg, Elberfield, and Berlin in 1901; wins European Greco-Roman title from Tom Cannon on 02/09/04 in Liverpool, GBR; wins recognition as World champion on 04/01/30 in London, GBR, defeating Ahmed Madrali; defeats American title holder Tom Jenkins on 05/05/04 in New York, NY to become recognized world champion in North America.
Hackenschmidt was really recognized in Europe since April 1900? That is new for me, because he does not win any World Championship Tournament in April 1900 or in 1900, that he had won a recognition. 1900 there were held up five Tournaments as World Greco-Roman Championship. Here are the list with the winners:
Greco-roman Style
1900 - Berlin (02.1900)
Paul Pons
1900 - St. Petersburg
Alexander Aberg
1900 - Vienna
Paul Pons
1900 - Paris
Kara Ahmed
1900 - Paris (12.1900)
Laurent le Beaucairois
You have written, that Hackenschmidt had won this World Greco-Roman Tournament in 1901:
Vienna
Paris
Hamburg
St. Petersburg
Elberfield
Berlin
^^ Elberfield is now a part of the german City Wuppertal.
Elberfield and Berlin had no World Greco-Roman Tournaments in 1901. 1901 there were held up three Tournaments in Europe as World Greco-Roman Tournament.
1901 - Hamburg (01.1901)
1901 - Vienna (04.-05.1901)
1901 - Paris (11.-12.1901)
The tournaments in Elberfield and Berlin was a regional Championship and the Vienna World Greco Roman Tournament was held up from April until 05. May 1901. On 05. May 1901, at the final day, Hackenschmidt beat Halil Adali and won the tournament. He beat Constant le Boucher in December 1901 and won the Paris Tournament, but not the Hamburg Tournament.
Final Day of the Vienna Tournament:
05.05.1901
Jakob Koch def. Nicolai Petroff
Jess Pedersen def. Charles Fengler
George Hackenschmidt def Halil Adali
Places:
Winner: George Hackenschmidt
2. Halil Adali
3. Paul Pons
4. Aimable de la Calmette
5. Laurent le Beaucairois
The Hamburg Tournament has no Winner in the Heavyweight Division. That was cancelled, but a winner in the light heavyweight division: Georg Lurich. Lurich was the only winner.
The Tournament in Vienna starts on 07. April until 05. May and not in November 1901. So Hackenschmidt has won two World Greco-Roman Tournaments in 1901:
1901 - Vienna (04.-05.1901)
George Hackenschmidt
1901 - Paris (11.-12.1901)
